Cards
I. Kirk, Cardmaker to King Henry the VIIIThis
deck was made especially for Colonial Williamsburg,
a historical recreation community in Virginia
(United States) where they have people displaying
life in the 17th and 18th centuries in the American
colonies.
The deck itself is
printed on uncoated heavy card stock, cut with
square corners, and has no design on the back, which
is what, I understand, real-people's cards were like
until the 19th and 20th centuries. Coating, of
course, wouldn't have existed as we know it at all
until very recently, and back designs were an
expensive and useless luxury (and an invitation to
marking). NN-W-4168

Cards
I. Kirk, Cardmaker to His
Majesty and the Prince of WalesThe
deck is a simple, standard set of number- and
face-cards, presumably designed for common use. You
can see that the printing is done in four colors:
red, blue, yellow and black. And likewise, that the
colors were printed separately, one atop the other.
That's consistent with the normal techniques for
doing multi-color wood-cut printing, where either
you would make four sets of plates, or mask your
master plates for each color.
This deck is simple,
square-cut, and without decoration on the
back. Great for collectors. NN-W-75234

Early
Period Playing Cards
Inspired by
English deck, the backs are blank, as was
common on early decks, and printed in just
red & black. Although jokers were not
used until the 1800's, they have included
jokers inspired by the face cards for
games that require them.
Appropriate for Re-enactors from the
English Civil War to American Civil
War.
-A very "classic" deck, very
similar packs date from the 1600's, to the
1800's. To insure they are useable by a
wide range of re-enactors (and keep the
cost low) they have specifically avoided
recreating a period wrapper, or tax stamp
so they are not tied to any one era.
